MORAL OF THE SERIES

Your upbringing can be a very influential part of who you are as a person, but it doesn’t have to define you. You are unique in your own way and will always have something to contribute to your community whether it be your family or the world.

WHO I THINK WOULD MOST ENJOY THIS SERIES

Fans of quirky humor and grounded superhero characters. If you’re intrigued by the combination of Cheaper by the Dozen and X-Men, then this show is for you.

ADDITIONAL NOTES/COMMENTARY

First off, as you can see, Moral of the Movie has expanded to include TV shows as well. Nowadays, thanks to the streaming boom of binge-worthy shows, TV has become more cinematic than ever. The Umbrella Academy is such an example of being a Netflix original series that is as cinematic as a blockbuster movie; it’s essentially a 10-hour movie. This first season of the show sets up the very intriguing premise and its spectacularly interesting cast of characters. At times, the show does feel a bit dragged out, but the world-building of the show is interesting enough that I didn’t mind. The interactions between the titular Umbrella Academy siblings bear the heart of the show as you root for all of them in different ways according to the different obstacles that each of them face. Nonetheless, what stood out about this show’s first season was its Tarantino-like sequences that perfectly combined great music with fascinating visuals/cinematography. The visual effects of this show are up to par with the ones seen in big-budget superhero films like Avengers, which isn’t often said about superhero TV shows (ie. Agents of Shield, Supergirl, Arrow, Flash, etc.). Overall, this season mainly sets up a world and family dynamics that are really intriguing and worth further exploring in the next season as they are clearly not fully realized yet.
