MORAL OF THE MOVIE
Everyone has their own unique power that they can use to fight systems of oppression; use your power for good.
WHO I THINK WOULD MOST ENJOY THIS MOVIE
Fans of visual spectacles (things you can only see in movies) and typical popcorn movies. In other words, you’ll enjoy this movie if you like movies such as the Fast and Furious franchise, Transformers franchise, etc. but don’t expect this one to be as big in scale.
ADDITIONAL NOTES/COMMENTARY
At first, I was very intrigued by Project Power’s premise: “When a pill that gives its users unpredictable superpowers for five minutes hits the streets of New Orleans, a teenage dealer and a local cop must team with an ex-soldier to take down the group responsible for its creation.” As a fan of Sci-Fi and superpower-focused movies, my imagination ran wild with that premise. However, the final product doesn’t quite live up to its potential. The end result is more along the lines of a visual spectacle that is fun to watch and eat popcorn to, but is not really fit for much else other than that. Nevertheless, the moments that really stuck with me from this movie were those that had a really good combination of music (score) and cinematography. I often get chills from movie scenes that I either really like or move me emotionally. For this one, I got chills in those cinematic slow-mo sequences when the superpower pill is taken simply because they looked really cool. Yet, there’s not much else that I can say about the movie that struck a chord with me. The writing and dialogue get pretty cheesy at times to the point that it gets very predictable. The performances from Joseph Gordon-Levitt (one of my favorite actors), Jamie Foxx, and debut starlet Dominique Fishback fit decently within the movie’s purpose as they carry the film towards what we really came for: superpower-fueled action. In the end, I can only recommend Project Power if you’re in it for the cool visuals and popcorn fun; otherwise, I’d probably steer you towards other action movies that deliver that and so much more (ie. Train to Busan, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, etc.).
