Moral of the Movie - Review

Hush (2016)

Suspense/Thriller, Directed by Mike Flanagan | Rating: Memorable One-Night Stand | Published: Sept. 2, 2022, 10:12 a.m.

MORAL OF THE MOVIE

1) Even when there are many possibilities depending on your choice, it is best to commit and give your fullest to whatever you choose (gut instinct also helps). 2) Physical isolation is alright as is but can become quite dangerous when combined with social isolation. It is often healthier/safer to have people who you care about and vice-versa to check in with every now and then.

WHO I THINK WOULD MOST ENJOY THIS MOVIE

If you like thrillers that make your heart beat faster and faster relentlessly, then you will definitely enjoy Hush the most. Hush is along the lines of Don’t Breathe (2016), Good Time (2017), and The Gift (2015) that constantly build the tension without any sort of release or break for its audience.

ADDITIONAL NOTES/COMMENTARY

The premise of the movie alone is anxiety-inducing: A deaf and mute writer who retreated into the woods to live a solitary life must fight for her life in silence when a masked killer appears at her window. The film is just as anxiety-inducing, if not more. There’s a few things that I didn’t like about how they approached the premise, but for the sake of avoiding spoilers, I’m not going to go into too much detail. What I will say is that I think that they could have done much more with experiencing the horror through the eyes and ears (ironically) of the main character. Also, the scariest thing about the antagonist was his mysteriousness and I wished they would’ve played with that a bit more. Nevertheless, the cinematic experience was quite thrilling as intended. There were moments were I wanted to look away to get a break from the tension but just couldn’t look away because I was desperate to see what happened next. Another great thing about this movie is how it plays with your expectations, yet it doesn’t rely on jump scares like conventional thrillers. In the end, Hush is an unconventional thriller that may or may not be your cup of tea but has decent performances and an intriguing premise that will make it memorable for fans of the genre.
