MORAL OF THE MOVIE

All anyone ever wants in this world is to be appreciated. Through resilience and determination, the film’s protagonist achieves his dreams of national appreciation (fame) while also helping others along the way. This movie shows that you can fulfill your dreams (whatever they may be) by doing your best at whatever you set your mind to and working well with others.

WHO I THINK WOULD MOST ENJOY THIS MOVIE

Anyone comfortable with crude humor that is trying to have a genuinely good time at the movies while also looking for some inspiration and heart both in between and within the wise-cracking jokes.

ADDITIONAL NOTES/COMMENTARY

I did not expect to be completely inspired by this movie. Dolemite Is My Name is the rare type of comedy that genuinely has the heart (masterfully brought to you especially by the performances of Eddie Murphy and Da'Vine Joy Randolph) to make it a timeless classic. The film addresses tough subjects that we can all relate to such as thinking we’re less than, feeling unappreciated, and wanting something more out of our lives while still making it a very enjoyable experience. Another thing that hit the right note for me is the allegorical nature of the film’s plot: movies by and for black people. The movie shows how important representation in film and the big stages of mass media is necessary to open the doors for the type of entertainment that fits the needs of modern, diverse audiences. Now more than ever, representation in media has to actually be representative of the audiences and national populations by including all types of people (especially, unheard minorities). This paves the way for a variety of perspectives that ultimately lead to a greater sense of empathy from audiences for the groups of people that are being shown in the big screen. Lastly, Wesley Snipes also comes back to the spotlight with a great performance as part of a great cast that all gave their part to the heart of the story. This is the type of movie that’d I’d love to go back to every once in a while for an incredibly enjoyable cinematic experience and a reflection of its relatable themes.
